Officers can be unintentionally injured during officer–suspect interactions, and these injuries are often not coded as assaults.
Injuries that officers sustain while chasing, detaining, arresting, or pursuing suspects. These are termed resistance-related injuries.
Between 2012 and 2017, an estimated 303,500 officers were treated in U.S. emergency departments for nonfatal injuries for an overall injury rate of 568 per 10,000 full-time equivalents.
According to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report 2019 LEOKA report: There have been 56,034 assaults against law enforcement officers in 2019, resulting in 17,188 injuries.
More than half of officers’ nonfatal injuries occurred when they were interacting, detaining, or pursuing a suspect. This highlights the need to code nonfatal injuries in a consistent and meaningful way that informs police policy and practice.

One-tenth of the bills introduced before this year’s legislative session seek curbs in police and arrest powers. They have names like the Police Accountability Act (HB18); the Ethical Policing Act (HB35); the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act (HB16), and the Preventing Tragedies Between Police and Communities Act (HB15).
Question to Police:
With all that has transpired in the media over the last two years,

-
• Police are racist.
-
• Police Officers KILL PEOPLE.
The PERF Survey
To gauge whether the staffing crisis is a widespread phenomenon or is limited to a small number of departments, PERF fielded a survey of police agencies whose chief executives are PERF members. The survey was conducted from May 10 to May 21, 2021.
HIRING: The reduction in hiring was relatively modest, with a 5% overall decrease in the hiring rate among responding departments. Smaller agencies actually saw an increase in hiring, while larger departments experienced dramatic reductions.
RESIGNATIONS: Increases in resignations were more significant. Agencies reported an overall 18% increase in the resignation rate in 2020-21, compared to 2019-20.
RETIREMENTS: Increases in retirements were even larger. Among all responding police departments, there was a 45% increase in the retirement rate. (In small departments, a small number of retirements may result in a high percentage increase in the retirement rate. But even in the largest agencies, with 500 or more officers, the retirement rate increased by 27%.)

Spiritual Injury
The essence of community policing is a police- community partnership for identifying, prioritizing and resolving citizen problems. The nature of community policing demands that attention be paid to public expectations of police, and implies listening to citizens and taking their problems seriously.
A critical precursor to community policing is identifying citizens’ perceptions of police and their local neighborhoods.
