It is a bit difficult not to. All of us struggle with this idea of keeping score. Day in and day out we believe in a good loving God who forgives us when we ask Him, but we still try to keep score in our heads. We try to keep up with what we have done to rack up some "brownie points" with God. If we give, pray, go to church, go on a mission trip, or basically do something good, we think God will notice and we might get a few of some kind of "points." Now if you know any biblical theology you realize this is not the way that God works, but that you also realize that this is the way we think.
The Bible is pretty plain about us trying to do stuff to please God.
Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT 8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.Isaiah 64:6 NLT We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.
So each of us must realize that there is not a chance to score a point with God. No you see He loves you so much that you are already a winner, a champion, and a child of His. That is if you are a believer with faith in Him. You have nothing to prove, there is no test to pass. As a matter of fact, to try to walk around keeping score in your head of I have done this for you God, is a work of the flesh and is idolatry. To think you can do something to supplement the work Jesus has done to pay for your sin on the cross is to make a mockery of the cross. You see the Bible is plain about what He does for us. So let this Scripture sink deep into your heart.
Psalm 113:12 NLT He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.
God is not keeping any kind of score against you, and your sinfulness. No, but he does bless your walk with Him. When you are being obedient to Him and walking as a man or woman who loves the Lord you are blessed..
The lie of Satan is that we look at other people and size up our spiritual condition based on what others are doing. How foolish. We sort of compile the score in our heads looking at other people by statements such as," Why they don't even attend Sunday School." "You know he will not lead prayer.' "Well I know that He drinks a beer now and then." And on and on it goes that we look at others and feel like we are better somehow for something we have done or are doing. We are keeping score.
Loose your scorecard. Throw it away and stop judging others by their works. And by all means do not sit around feeling you are inadequate to do the work of God because of something you did in the past. God does not keep score. For this I praise HIM. For this I rejoice and celebrate that we are victorious in Christ Jesus.
Psalm 1: 1-3 NLT
1 Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
or stand around with sinners,
or join in with mockers.
2 But they delight in the law of the LORD,
meditating on it day and night.
3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.
