A Great Day with the Family

Christmas came two days later than most folks for the Davis family this year but it did not lack in its intensity. We had 14 at our home for lunch and what a menu we had. Pork Loin, Cube Deer Steak, and Quail for meat, Potato Salad, Mashed Potatoes, peas, baked beans, corn cassarole, biscuits, coconut cake, buttermilk pie and some other stuff I am probably forgetting. The quail supplied by my good friend Jimmy Amerson was a big hit. My father who loves them had not had any in 30 years. I grilled them and they were grabbed up by everyone.  The fact is I do not remember a christmas I felt so at ease with all the family and the fun we were having. After the food we spent a few hours just sitting around talking and just having time to really care for each other. Christmas is alll about Jesus and sharing with each other. Gifts are always nice but the greatest gift is Salvation from the Lord. In this family this is taught and practiced not just on Christmas but year round. Praise the Lord.
The quail turned out delicious and no there were none left.

Christmas Poem 2008

Merry Christmas everyone. I have for a good many years written a poem on Christmas. Some have been silly and some made me cry. I do not claim to be a good poet but I am original. I hope if you read this one that you will enjoy it.

Christmas Poem 2008
 

The world is so full of trouble and woe,

Many fine people do not know which way to go.
 

It is a time of strife and great economic unrest,

Our faith it seems is going through a test.
 

Yet in this year of transition and change,

Where there are fears that cover quite a large range,
 

I have found a peace, and a new understanding,

All due to God’s grace which is ever abounding.
 

So much has been accomplished in this past year,

And this alone shows how His blessings are clear.
 

The project is complete and commencement is past,

The trip up to Raleigh was short and it was fast.
 

My support from my family made me realize my wealth,

I have discovered it is not found in dollars, knowledge, or health.
 

Faith, in the Lord Jesus Christ is the only real treasure,

And in its use I find real lasting pleasure.
 

But, in the realizing of faith like a little tiny seed,

We can accomplish something that is really a God sized deed.
 

My Lord who came in a manger so humble, and so meek,

Is the true source of strength for those of us who are weak.
 

Christmas is a time to celebrate our Lord’s coming to earth.

It is filled with food and decorations and a spirit of mirth.
 

This is due to the gift of grace from the child

Who came to the world, so lowly and mild.
 

The problems of men with all their trials and fretting and strife,

All come to naught when we look at His life.
 

He had a life of hardship in the mid eastern sun,

And over all life’s temptations the victory was won.
 

With teaching so deep so new and profound,

At first there were plenty of people around.
 

Then as He revealed the need for Him to die,

They all left Him and would not look him in the eye.
 

His victory over the grave is now very clear,

And this truth like his birth, is one we hold dear.
 

I have found that the Davis Family truly is blessed

Not from money or degrees, but only because this truth is confessed.

Christmas Eve Thougts

It is Christmas Eve Morning and I am beginning to see the light at the enc of a long tunnel. Right after Graduation we began a series of work to change the house around that has left all of you readers in the dark for a few days as you probably that since I was now a doctor I was off doing Dr Pepper commercials. Well I was really doing the following. Clearing our the stuff In the old office upstairs so I could move my stuff in. Then after much moving several desk being given away and trip to the dump I could begin the move. I have a lot of books guys and it takes a bunch to move all my stuff. Then once then my old office was empty it was cleaning and then paintiing. After painting it is moving Brittany downstairs to the old office which is really like a copy of the master suite in the house. She is loving it. I like my new office also as it is on the main level of the house next to the Master Bedroon and with a door near the front door for folks who come by to see me. Why am I writing about this simple because this is most of what has consumed me for the last 10 days. We also have to clean up Brittany's carpet and swap the furniture in two bedrooms upstairs but we are almost done with that also. I think there is a chance we will be done today Yea!

I am already started on new years resolutions.  First I am going to read the Bible through again next year. I have already started. I am using a different program this time which is on my computer instead of using Crosswalk. I am also determined to get myself in a little better shape next year physically.

It is Christmas eve and I am rambling about stuff. I am thinking today and it was the first thought of the day that tomorrow is the day that we celebrate Jesus. His coming. God became a man. So He could bring us to himself.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. on the move around the house, but even greater as I begin to celebrate this Christmas I can see the Light of the reality of His presence in my life like never before. This is a great Christmas eve thought. I will be writing a little more so do not lose heart valiant readers I will soon be back with updates.

Treasures from the Travel

The familiar task of traveling to Wake Forest NC is now over. Friday morning just a little before noon Seminary President Danny Akin conferred on me the degree Doctor of MInistry and we as a family headed home. I have had a lot of travel in pursuit of this mark of achievement and without God's call in my life to venture forth on this journey I would not have been successful.

There are three treasures on the photo so take a minute to hear the stories of how they were won.

First of course is the diploma. Lots of hours in the class room reading over a 160 books and writing till my fingers hurt. Plus surveys completed by 60 police officers and 18 officers discussing a most difficult moment in their career when they had to use deadly force. There was much effort by many.

Second is the certificate on the left and it has Kathy's name on it. She earned it. It is a PHT or Putting Honey Through degree. I was proud of her certificate and went to get a frame and then did the unthinkable. I had put it on top of the wardrobe int he hotel room so that she would not see it until I was ready to give it to her, but when we left I forgot it. What a dummy on a day that I am being awareded a degree for smartness. After graduation I ran back to the hotel and thank the Lord it was still there and the treasure was retrieved.

The third treasure is not directly related to the task of school but will always be remembered as part of this travel. In my last article I wrote about Brian and Bethany's engagement and on this trip we had the opportunity to meet Bethany's parents and sister. Jerry, Barbra and Emma met us as a family (minus Brett, Ashley, Leslie and Bethany) at O'Charleys. Their gift of the coffee mug that has engraved Dr, Scotty Davis on the side was a nice and much appreciated gesture on their part. What I value from this is the greatest treasure I have on this earth, my family. The Lord has blessed with 4 wonderful children. and two wonderful daughter in laws. Now as I completed my education God will once again add tot he family with another daughter in law, and she like the others is truly a treasure.

I am so thankful to all who have encouraged and helped me along the way in the process, and for my families love and support for the task. Of course most of all I am thankful to God for his call on my life. Dr James Merritt talked about the call in the commencement message. He took me back to the moment in 1989 on the side of the road in Smyrna where I said yes to the call. Thank you God for your love and forgiveness to bring me along a long road. Thank you Lord for continuing to bless and equip me for the ministry task that lie ahead. These earthly treasures are nice, but will all perish one day. The heavenly treasure that God gives by allowing me to serve in the ministry will be the ultimate honor of a lifetime. What a joy to think of having a crown of life to lay at the Savior's feet. It all belongs to Him and only He is worthy. I have a piece of paper that says I am smart but in the day I see him face to face it will mean nothing. But His robe of righteousness, will cover me, and allow, me to be in the presence of God. Hallelujah!!!

The need for water is so huge. The need for Jesus dwarfs the need for water. What if the people who can help others have clean water bring them Jesus also. Just a thought.

Wrighting Rodeo

After Thanksgiving I thought that it would slow down in my life a little but I think the after burnes have kicked in on all that is happening in my life. I feel like I need to take a rope and lasso all the different things going on and pull them up tight and jump off my horse take the bull by the horns and bulldog life to the ground.

Newsletter had to be finished... Kathy is working a bucnch of hours... Christmas tree had to be decorated at church...ONE major interview for consulting work ...TWO major meetings for mission planning... Had missionaries as house guest for a night ... THREE  large events with the police department... A funeral that I did not plan on (no one ever plans on attending a funeral very far in advance)... several counseling appointments...a meeting to plan on starting a new Lifegroup... And here is the real kicker...My Father in law is in the hospital ...and now a nephew is in the hospital. Of course Brittany had to be taken and picked up at school as always and.. in reality it was busy enough that it seems meals were optional.

Here are a couple of strays to be listed.. Had a great time at regular prayergroup... read and answered a bucket of email... wrestled a mouse in the attic (I won)... and through all this there is one bit of Huge News on Tuesday I have not written about yet. 

BRIAN PROPOSED TO BETHANY AND SHE SAID YES!!  Yea! I am going to have another daughter in law. She is a delightful young woman from Raleigh NC  and the greatest thing about her is that she loves Jesus with all her heart. I am so happy for them. Brian ask me yesterday if I would perform the ceremony Yea! nothing could thrill me more.

What a week for one that I thought would be a little slow to maybe catch up on reading and do a little writing.

Thank you God for all you allow me to do and for the provision you make for me to serve in Your Kingdoms work. Thank you for a beautiful family that is growing. Thank you for my three sons who are serving you, for my beautiful daughter, and three wonderful daughter in laws. God thank you for my wonderful and faithful wife. God you are so good to me. Thanks for a chance to write and proclaim your goodness. Amen

You know it has been a busy week and it has been like a rodeo to even think back over it and write it all down. But life is full and good and I praise Him for it.
